The best hotel of the year is not the largest, the newest, or the most photographed. It is the one that remembered what it felt like to be a guest.

We spent six weeks this fall visiting eleven properties across Asia, Europe, and East Africa. Some were breathtaking on Instagram and disappointing at check-in. Some were quiet online and revelatory in person. What follows is our unranked, deeply opinionated shortlist.

The rooms

A great hotel room does three things: it makes the light work at every hour of the day, it hides the technology, and it treats the bathroom as a room, not an appendage. Everything else is decoration. This year, only four properties on our shortlist met all three tests.

A softly lit hotel bedroom with linen drapes and a low, wide bed.

The service

The tell is always the second day. Anyone can execute a great arrival. Very few teams can make you feel remembered by breakfast on your second morning without being awkward about it.

Frequently asked

Questions readers sent us

What makes a hotel worth flying for?+

A sense of place you can't get anywhere else — food from within 50 miles, staff who live locally, and architecture that couldn't exist elsewhere. Everything else is amenity.

How far ahead should I book?+

For the properties on this list, 4–6 months for peak season. Two of them keep a waitlist that moves faster than the booking calendar.

Genuinely useful. The barrier-first framing has changed how I think about my entire routine.

Second this. Ceramides quietly did more for my skin than any serum I've bought.

Would love a follow-up piece specifically on fragrance layering — the last one was excellent.

Testing all three picks now. Reporting back in eight weeks.
